Bulk Actions in Google Search Console: What Works and What Doesn't

By the Pick Ads team · Tested on Chrome · Published October 20, 2026 · Updated October 20, 2026

Answer: Search Console handles some jobs in bulk: reports, sitemaps, and validating fixes. Requesting indexing, inspecting URLs, and removing URLs work one URL at a time, and each has limits. Sitemaps are Google's own bulk route for indexing. Browser tools can queue the one-at-a-time steps for you, but they don't raise Google's quotas.

What "bulk" means in Search Console

In this guide, "bulk" means acting on a list of URLs instead of one URL. Search Console has three kinds of tools:

  • Report-level tools cover the whole property: the Page indexing report, the Sitemaps report, and Validate fix.
  • Per-URL tools take one URL at a time: URL Inspection, Request indexing, and Removals requests.
  • APIs are for developers: the URL Inspection API, sitemap submission, and the Indexing API for a narrow set of page types.

Indexing: status, requests, limits

Is there an API for requesting indexing? Google's Indexing API only accepts pages with JobPosting, or BroadcastEvent embedded in a VideoObject. The default quota is 200 publish requests per project per day, and abuse can get your access revoked (Indexing API quickstart). Our GSC Index vs Indexing API guide covers the differences.

Removals: temporary vs permanent

The Removals tool hides a URL, or every URL under a prefix, for about six months. Requests usually take up to a day and aren't guaranteed to be accepted. Google can keep crawling the page while it's hidden. To remove a page for good, return 404 or 410, put it behind a password, or add noindex. Don't rely on robots.txt for this (Remove a page hosted on your site).

Which tool do I need?

  • You want pages indexed. Fix the pages first, submit a sitemap, then use GSC Index to queue Request indexing for the URLs that changed.
  • You want pages out of Google. Fix them at the source (404/410, password, or noindex), then use URLSweep to queue temporary removals for the URLs still showing.
  • You only want to know the status. Use the Page indexing report, or GSC Index "Check on Google" for a specific list.

Limits and safety

  • No extension raises Google's quotas. GSC Index and URLSweep stop when Search Console stops accepting requests.
  • Nothing guarantees indexing. Google says it doesn't guarantee to crawl, index, or serve any page, and doesn't accept payment to crawl more often (How Google Search works).
  • Removals are temporary unless you fix the page at the source.
  • Both extensions run in your own signed-in Search Console tab. Neither asks for your Google password.

FAQ

Can I request indexing for many URLs at once? Search Console has no bulk Request indexing button. Each request goes through URL Inspection, and there's a daily limit per property. For many URLs, Google recommends submitting a sitemap. A browser extension can queue the one-by-one requests for you, but it can't go past Google's limit.

Is there an API for it? Only for a narrow set of pages. Google's Indexing API accepts pages with JobPosting or livestream (BroadcastEvent) markup and has a default quota of 200 publish requests per day. The URL Inspection API reports index status and doesn't request indexing.

Does bulk removal delete my pages? No. The Removals tool only hides URLs from Google Search results for about six months. Your pages stay online and Google can still crawl them. To remove a page permanently, delete it so it returns 404 or 410, password-protect it, or add noindex.

Do these tools need my Google password? No. GSC Index and URLSweep run inside the Search Console tab where you're already signed in, and your URL lists stay in your browser. A Pick Ads sign-in is only needed to buy or restore Premium.
