Search Console Removals vs noindex vs 410

Updated October 2026 · v1.0.1

These three are not interchangeable. A removal hides a result quickly and then expires. noindex is an instruction on a URL Google can still fetch. A 410 tells Google the URL is gone.

URLSweep only helps with the removal queue. It cannot add a noindex tag or change your HTTP status. If the page should stay out of the index, fix the site as well.

Pick the signal on purpose

Decide the end state before you open Search Console.

  1. Need it hidden soon, page may stay up. A temporary removal plus, if the page must not return, a noindex or a taken-down file.
  2. Page stays up but should not be indexed. Serve noindex and allow Google to crawl it so the tag can be seen. A removal alone will expire.
  3. Page should be gone. Return 410 or 404 from the server, and remove internal links. Request a removal only if the old result is still showing and you need it hidden while Google recrawls.

Use URLSweep only for the removal half

After the site sends the right status or robots tag, a long list of leftover results is the extension’s job.

  1. Export the URLs that are still in results. From a crawl, a sitemap of the retired section, or Search Console.
  2. Filter to the URLs you really want hidden. Do not prefix-remove the whole host to clear one folder you could list exactly.
  3. Submit the removals. Keep the Removals tab open. Free covers 20 per property. The list is not uploaded to Pick Ads.

Order of operations

  • A removal of a URL that still returns 200 and is linked everywhere will come back when the removal expires.
  • noindex on a URL that is blocked by robots.txt may never be seen.
  • 410 is the honest status for a page you deleted. It is not a Search Console button.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will URLSweep add noindex for me?

No. Change the page or the server yourself. The extension submits removals.

Is a removal the same as deindexing forever?

No. It is temporary. Pair it with a status code or a noindex if the URL should not return.

What if I only want the cache snippet gone?

The Removals tool has a clear-cached-URL choice as well as a hide. Read the scope in the dialog. URLSweep can target that flow when you pick it in the review step.
