How to Remove URLs from Google After You Delete the Pages

Updated October 2026 · v1.0.1

Deleting a page on your site does not delete the result. Google keeps the URL until it recrawls and sees a 404 or 410, which can take a while.

Serve a gone status, then use Removals if the old result is still public and you need it hidden sooner. URLSweep submits that removal list. It does not edit the site.

Make the URL actually gone

Do this on the server or the CMS before you open Search Console.

  1. Remove or unpublish the page. Confirm an anonymous request gets 404 or, better when it is permanent, 410.
  2. Update internal links and the sitemap. Stop advertising the URL. Drop it from the sitemap you submit.
  3. Inspect one retired URL. If it is still on Google, submit one temporary removal so you know the dialog.

Remove the retired list

The list should be the URLs you deleted, not the URLs you rewrote to new addresses. A rewritten URL wants a redirect, not a removal.

  1. Export the deleted URLs. From the CMS, the redirect map’s “gone” column, or a crawl of 410s.
  2. Exclude anything that 301s. A removal of a URL that redirects can hide the new page’s signals. Check the filter.
  3. Submit. 20 per property on Free. Premium for the long tail and a CSV of what was submitted.

Redirects and removals conflict

  • If the URL moved, use a 301 to the new URL and request indexing of the new URL. Do not remove it.
  • A removal expires. The 410 is what keeps it out afterwards.
  • Parameter URLs and the clean URL may both be indexed. List both if both are showing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a deleted product be removed or redirected?

Redirect it if a replacement product exists. Remove it, and 410 it, if nothing replaced it.

Will the result vanish the same day?

A successful temporary removal is meant to hide it quickly. Google’s own help is the timing source. The extension only submits the form.

Can I undo a prefix mistake?

Cancel it in Search Console if the tool still lets you. Prevention is the preview step. URLSweep cannot restore a result Google has hidden.
