How to Clean Up ChatGPT and Claude History on a Work or Shared Computer

Answer: First check your employer's data policy. Then export the personal chats you want to keep, delete the rest, clear saved memories, delete shared links, disconnect apps, and sign out of all sessions. Finally, clear browser data and remove extensions you installed. On a work-managed account, your organization's retention rules still apply after you delete.

Important: follow your employer's data and records policy. Do not delete work records you are required to keep. If unsure, ask IT or HR before you start.

Check your employer's policy first

Which account you used decides what you can do:

If the chats belong to a work workspace, they are usually your employer's records. Leave them alone unless IT tells you otherwise.

The cleanup checklist (ChatGPT)

Work through these in order. Export first, because deletion can't be undone.

Export personal items. Settings > Data controls > Export data > Export > Confirm export. The link arrives by email or SMS, can take up to 7 days, and expires 24 hours after you receive it (Exporting your ChatGPT history and data). For selected chats only, export them to Markdown with Bulk Delete (steps below).
Delete chats. One at a time from the ••• menu, or all at once with Settings > Data controls > Delete all chats. OpenAI notes this can include chats in projects.
Clear memory. Settings > Personalization > Memory. Deleting chats doesn't delete saved memories. See does deleting ChatGPT chats delete memory?
Delete shared links. Settings > Data controls > Shared links > Manage, then Delete shared link, or Delete all shared links under More actions. Copies others already saved stay in their accounts (Sharing conversations in ChatGPT).
Disconnect apps. Settings > Plugins > select the app > Disconnect . This stops future access but doesn't delete past chats or memories. Also revoke access on the provider's side, such as your Google or Microsoft account (Connecting and managing app accounts).
Sign out everywhere. Settings > Security > Active sessions > Log out of all sessions > Log out all, then confirm. It can take up to 30 minutes, and it isn't available for SSO-linked work accounts (Managing active sessions).
Clear the browser. In Chrome: More > Delete browsing data, choose All time, and select cookies and history. If you're signed in to Chrome with sync, this also removes the data from your other devices (Delete browsing data in Chrome).
Remove extensions you installed. More > Extensions > Manage extensions, then remove each one . Clearing browsing data doesn't delete extension data.

Bulk steps with the extension

If you have hundreds of chats and only want to remove some, Bulk Delete for ChatGPT & Claude saves clicks.

Install the extension and open chatgpt.com (or claude.ai) while signed in.
Open the Bulk Delete panel and refresh the list.
Filter by age or date range, or search titles.
Select chats (Select all, or shift-click a range).
Export to Markdown if you need a copy.
Start the delete. Pause or stop it if you change your mind.

Claude equivalent

Anthropic says deleted conversations leave your history immediately and are deleted from its back-end within 30 days (Delete or rename a conversation). Deleting a chat doesn't remove memory entries generated from it, so clear memory separately (Claude chat search and memory). For bulk deletion on claude.ai, see delete Claude conversations in bulk.

Reliability tips

Export, then open the file and check it before deleting anything.
Do memory and shared links last. New chats during cleanup can create new memories.
Don't use a Temporary Chat or incognito chat as a cleanup tool for work accounts. Claude Team and Enterprise owners can still export incognito chats.

When another approach is better

Work-managed account: ask IT to offboard it. You may not be allowed to delete, and deleting may not remove admin copies.
You want to keep everything: archive instead of deleting. See archive vs delete.
You're closing the account: delete the account in settings. That also deletes your shared conversation links.

FAQ

Will my employer still have logs? Possibly. In ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, admins may access content, and compliance tools may reach eligible data after you delete it. Claude Team and Enterprise owners can export organization data, including incognito chats. Your company's own network or device logs are outside ChatGPT and Claude. Ask IT.

Can I delete only one project's chats? Yes, in ChatGPT itself: open the project and delete its chats individually. Bulk Delete deliberately never selects project chats, so it can't do this. Be careful with ChatGPT's Delete all chats, because OpenAI says it can include chats inside projects.

What about browser history? Clear it in Chrome under More > Delete browsing data, with the time range set to All time. Include cookies to sign out of sites. Chrome notes that extensions keep their own data, so remove extensions you installed. If you used Chrome sync, deletion also applies to your other devices.
