Are Deleted ChatGPT Chats Really Deleted?

Answer: Yes, with exceptions. When you delete a ChatGPT chat, it disappears from your account at once. OpenAI says it is then scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days. Exceptions apply if the chat was already de-identified for training, or if OpenAI must keep it for security or legal reasons. You can't restore a deleted chat.

Nuance: deleting a chat doesn't remove saved memories, Library files, or copies other people already made from a shared link. Those are handled separately.

Archiving is not deleting. An archived chat leaves the sidebar but stays in your account, stays searchable, and follows the same retention rules as any saved chat.

What stays after a delete:

  • Saved memories. These are stored separately. See does deleting ChatGPT chats delete memory?
  • Library files. A file saved to Library survives the chat. Delete it there.
  • Files in GPTs and projects. These are kept until the GPT, project or file is deleted, then scheduled for deletion within 30 days.

In 2025, a court order in The New York Times' lawsuit required OpenAI to preserve consumer ChatGPT content, including deleted chats. In an October 22, 2025 update, OpenAI said that obligation ended on September 26, 2025, and that it had returned to deleting deleted chats and Temporary Chats within 30 days. OpenAI also said it still stores a limited set of historical user data from April to September 2025 under legal hold. That set excludes conversations from the EEA, Switzerland and the UK (OpenAI: response to The New York Times' data demands).

Temporary Chat

A temporary chat stays out of your history unless you save it. It isn't used to improve OpenAI's models while it stays temporary. OpenAI may still keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes (Temporary chat in ChatGPT). If you save it, it becomes a regular chat with normal retention. Training and data controls

Deleting and training are separate controls:

  • Improve the model for everyone (Settings > Data controls) decides whether new conversations can be used to train OpenAI's models. Turning it off doesn't delete or hide any chats (Data controls in ChatGPT).
  • Feedback counts. If you rate a response with thumbs up or down, OpenAI says the whole conversation may be used for training, even if you opted out.
  • De-identified data. If training was on, content already de-identified before you deleted it is outside the 30-day deletion.

Export before you delete

Deletion is permanent, so save what you need first.

  1. Open Settings > Data controls.
  2. Under Export data, select Export, then Confirm export.
  3. Wait for the email or SMS. OpenAI says it can take up to 7 days.
  4. Download within 24 hours. The link expires after that.
  5. Open the ZIP and check your conversations are there.

Work and school accounts

In ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces, your organization's retention policy applies. OpenAI notes that authorized compliance tools may still access eligible workspace data under that policy, even after you delete a chat. Self-service export isn't available in Business, Enterprise or Healthcare workspaces. Ask your workspace owner, and follow your employer's records policy before deleting anything.

How long data may be kept, and what you can request, depends on where you live. OpenAI accepts privacy requests through its Privacy Portal (privacy.openai.com) and by email, as listed in its privacy policy. Regulators' own guidance:

FAQ

Can OpenAI still see deleted chats? For up to 30 days, a deleted chat may remain in OpenAI's systems before permanent deletion. OpenAI may keep data longer when legally required or for security reasons, and de-identified training data is excluded. It also holds limited April to September 2025 data under a legal hold.

Does deleting remove shared links? Yes. OpenAI says deleting a conversation removes its shared link. However, anyone who already continued your shared chat has their own private copy, and deleting your link or chat doesn't remove it. You can manage links under Settings > Data controls > Shared links.

What about Claude? Anthropic says a deleted Claude conversation leaves your history immediately and is deleted from its back-end systems within 30 days. If you allowed model training, de-identified data may be kept for up to five years. Chats flagged for policy violations can be kept longer.

How do I request data deletion? For individual chats, delete them in ChatGPT. To delete everything, delete your account from settings. For formal privacy requests, use OpenAI's Privacy Portal at privacy.openai.com or the contact listed in its privacy policy. Work accounts should go through the workspace owner.
