Answer: A Temporary Chat keeps a conversation out of your history from the start. It creates no memories and isn't used for training while it stays temporary. OpenAI may still keep a copy for up to 30 days. Deleting works after the fact: it removes a regular chat from history, but not the memories that chat created.

What exactly happens

Temporary Chat. You choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before your first message, and you can't change it afterward. Neither mode creates or updates memories. If you save the chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows your normal personalization and training settings. OpenAI also notes that ChatGPT may use limited context from earlier conversations for safety, even with memory off.

Deleting. A deleted chat leaves your account at once and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. Content that was already de-identified for training, or kept for security or legal reasons, is excluded. Memories the chat produced stay until you delete them in Settings > Personalization > Memory. How to start a Temporary Chat

  1. Open a new chat.
  2. Select Temporary.
  3. Choose Personalized or Unpersonalized.
  4. Send your message.

To keep the conversation, save it before you leave. Otherwise you can't reopen it from history.

Cleaning up after

Temporary chats need no cleanup. Regular chats do:

  1. Delete chats. Use the ••• menu for one chat, or Settings > Data controls > Delete all chats for everything, which can include project chats.
  2. Delete memories. Go to Settings > Personalization > Memory. See does deleting ChatGPT chats delete memory?
  3. Delete selectively in bulk. Bulk Delete for ChatGPT & Claude lets you filter, select and delete many chats while leaving Projects and pinned chats alone. Free allows 20 deletes a day; Premium ($6.99/month or $69.90/year) is unlimited.

Caveats

  • Workspace rules win. Account and workspace restrictions take priority over your choice for a single temporary chat. On eligible Enterprise workspaces, temporary chats are available through the Compliance API for 30 days.
  • GPT actions. If a GPT sends data to a third party through an action, that party's policy applies. It may keep the data longer than 30 days.
  • Feedback. Thumbs up or down can make the whole conversation usable for training, even with the training setting off (Data controls in ChatGPT).
  • These behaviors change often. Check the dates above.

FAQ

Does Temporary Chat save anything? It isn't saved to your history and doesn't create memories while it stays temporary. OpenAI may still keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. If you choose Personalized, the chat can read your existing memories, custom instructions and plugins, but it doesn't add to them.

Can I recover it? Only if you saved it before leaving. Saving converts it to a regular chat in your history. An unsaved temporary chat can't be reopened from history after you leave it. Deleted regular chats can't be restored either, so export anything you need before you delete it.

Is it available on mobile? OpenAI's Temporary chat article doesn't list platforms. The training setting, Improve the model for everyone, is documented for iOS and Android under Settings > Data controls.
