Archive or Delete a ChatGPT Chat

Archive and delete answer different questions. Archive means “not in the main list, still recoverable in the product.” Delete means you are done with the text.

ChatGPT’s own menu can archive or delete one chat. Bulk Delete can delete a selection on the free plan (20 a day) and can archive a selection on Premium. Claude cleanup in this extension is delete, not ChatGPT archive.

Use the menu on one chat

Pick the action that matches whether you might reopen the thread.

Open the conversation menu. In the ChatGPT sidebar, use the control on that chat.
Archive to clear the list. Choose archive if ChatGPT offers it and you still want the thread later.
Delete to remove it. Confirm only when you do not need the text. Export or copy first if you do.

Apply one action to a selection

Select chats that should share the same fate. Do not mix “maybe later” and “gone” in one run.

Select only the chats for that action. Projects and pins stay unselected either way.
Archive on Premium. Archive is a Premium action on chatgpt.com. It is the right run when you want them out of the sidebar but not destroyed.
Delete when the export exists. Free can delete up to 20 a day. Premium deletes without that cap and can export a ZIP (Markdown, HTML, JSON) first.

Do not treat archive as delete

An archived chat can still be personal data sitting in the account. Delete is the step that removes it from the chat list.
Archived does not mean exported. Save a copy if you need the words outside ChatGPT.
Bulk archive is not on the free plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Free include archive?

No. Archive on ChatGPT is Premium. Free includes delete, with the daily cap, and a small Markdown export.

Can I archive Claude chats the same way?

This archive action is for ChatGPT. Use delete, after an export, for Claude threads you are finished with.

Will archive free up the sidebar?

That is the point of archive in ChatGPT: the main list gets shorter while the chat still exists in the archive.
