How to Delete ChatGPT Chats by Date

Updated October 2026 · v1.0.0

The sidebar is grouped loosely by time, not by a date field you can multi-select. Counting back to March by eye falls apart after a few screens.

Bulk Delete can filter the list by age or a date range before you select anything. The filter does not delete on its own. You still confirm the selection, and protected chats stay out.

Work through the sidebar groups

ChatGPT labels groups such as previous days or months. Those labels move, so treat them as a hint.

  1. Scroll to the period. Find the group that matches the month you want to thin out.
  2. Open anything you are unsure about. A title is not the content. Open the chat if the title is vague.
  3. Delete that chat. Use the conversation menu. There is no date checkbox in the stock UI.

Filter, review, then delete

Set the range wider than you think, then search, so you see stragglers before you run the job.

  1. Choose age or a start and end. Older than 30 days is a common first pass. A custom range fits a project that ended on a known day.
  2. Read the filtered titles. Clear the selection and reselect if a keeper is in the list and is not pinned.
  3. Run the delete. Free allows 20 deletes a day, so a year of daily chats is several days on Free or one run on Premium.

Dates are about the chat, not the facts inside it

  • A chat updated yesterday can still be about an old project. The filter follows the chat’s age, not a sentence inside it.
  • Pin a chat you edited recently but still consider “old” if you do not want it eligible.
  • Export the range if the period might be needed for work records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete everything from a single day?

Set a date range for that day, review the titles, then delete. Do not assume the sidebar’s “yesterday” group is a precise filter.

Does the filter apply to Claude?

Yes. The same age and date filters are on claude.ai in this extension.

Why are some old chats missing from the filter?

Project and pinned chats are excluded from selection even when they fall in the range.
