Does Deleting ChatGPT Chats Delete Its Memory?

By the Pick Ads team · Tested on Chrome · Published October 20, 2026 · Updated October 20, 2026

Answer: No, not completely. Deleting a ChatGPT chat removes that conversation, but a saved memory created from it stays until you delete the memory itself in Settings > Personalization > Memory. Custom instructions, files saved to Library, and connected apps are also managed separately. To fully remove something, delete the memory and the chat.

Nuance: if "Reference chat history" is on, ChatGPT can also draw on chats that are still in your history. Deleting those chats, or turning that setting off, stops it.

What ChatGPT keeps, and where

OpenAI describes Memory as drawing on several sources, depending on your plan and region: past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, files in Library, and connected apps (Memory in ChatGPT – OpenAI Help Center). Each one is cleared in a different place.

What is storedWhat it isDoes deleting a chat remove it?Where to clear it

What happens when you delete a chat

According to OpenAI, a deleted chat disappears from your account right away and is scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI's systems within 30 days. Exceptions: chats already de-identified, or chats OpenAI must keep for security or legal reasons. Deleted chats can't be restored (Deleting and archiving chats in ChatGPT).

What the delete does not do:

  • Saved memories stay. OpenAI stores them separately from chat history, so deleting the original chat does not remove a memory created from it (Memory in ChatGPT).
  • Library files stay. A file saved to Library survives the chat (Chat and file retention in ChatGPT).
  • Old answers keep old instructions. Changing custom instructions affects future replies. Older chats still show the earlier text until you delete those chats (ChatGPT Custom Instructions).

The reverse is also true. Deleting a saved memory stops ChatGPT using it, but mentions of that detail inside old chats remain until you delete those chats. OpenAI may keep logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.

How to clear each one

Saved memories

  1. Open Settings and select Personalization.
  2. Select Memory.
  3. Open Manage (or Saved memories) and delete individual items, or use the memory summary's options.
  4. Delete the chat where you first shared the detail.

In the memory summary, Don't mention this again only reduces future references. It doesn't delete the source. Delete and turn off memory deletes what the summary shows and turns Memory off, but leaves your chats in place.

Reference chat history

Turn off Reference chat history in the same Memory screen. OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is then scheduled for deletion within 30 days, while the chats themselves stay in your history. Turning off Reference saved memories also turns off Reference chat history.

One trap: turning Memory off doesn't delete past chats. If you turn it back on later, ChatGPT can build new memories from chats still in your history. If you don't want that, delete the old chats too.

Custom instructions

  1. Open Settings > Personalization > Custom Instructions.
  2. Turn off Enable customization, and clear the text fields if you want them gone.

Files and connected apps

Delete files from Library separately. To stop an app's access, open Settings > Plugins, select the app, and choose Disconnect (Connecting and managing app accounts in ChatGPT). Disconnecting doesn't delete past chats, files, or memories.

Chats

Delete one chat from its ••• menu, or everything from Settings > Data controls > Delete all chats. OpenAI notes this can include chats in projects.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT remember after I delete chats? It can. Saved memories are stored separately from chats, so deleting a chat leaves any memory created from it. Delete the memory in Settings > Personalization > Memory as well. If Reference chat history is on, ChatGPT stops using a chat once you delete it.

How do I turn memory off? Open Settings > Personalization > Memory and turn off the memory controls you see, such as Reference saved memories and Reference chat history. Turning memory off does not delete what's already saved or your past chats. Delete those separately if you want them gone.

Does Temporary Chat use memory? It depends on your choice before the first message. A Personalized temporary chat can use your existing memories and custom instructions. An Unpersonalized one doesn't. Neither creates or updates memories while it stays temporary, according to OpenAI's help center.

Does this apply to Claude? Partly. In Claude, memory is managed in Settings > Memory, where you can delete topics, pause memory, or reset it. Anthropic says deleting a conversation does not remove memory entries already generated from it, so delete those memories directly.
