How to Export and Back Up Your ChatGPT History Before Deleting It

Deleting old chats is useful until one of them held a prompt, a block of working code, or a decision you needed later. Export first, then delete.

This guide covers why a local copy matters, which format to keep, and a routine you can repeat. Bulk Delete can export the chats you pick on chatgpt.com and claude.ai, then delete the rest in the same session.

Why back up before you delete

  • Treat deletion as permanent. Do not assume a chat can be restored.
  • A good prompt is reusable. A local file lets you open it outside the chat site.
  • Some threads document a decision you may need to reread.
  • A file you store yourself stays available if you change tools.

Which format to use

Markdown

Best default. Small, readable, and easy to search in notes apps or a code editor. This is the Free export format.

HTML

Premium ZIP option. Useful when you want a page you can open in a browser.

JSON

Premium ZIP option. Structured text for scripts or a later import. It is not a full account archive from OpenAI.

Copy-paste or a browser print-to-PDF still works for one important thread. It does not scale to a long history.

Method 1: Copy a few chats

  1. Open the conversation. Use this when only one or two threads matter.
  2. Copy the parts you need. Paste them into a note or file you already back up.

Method 2: Your account’s data export

ChatGPT and similar tools may offer an account data export. That is a full archive of the account, not a way to pick a few conversations and leave the rest. Formats and steps change, so use the provider’s current help page if you want everything they store.

A selected export is the better fit when you are about to delete some chats and keep others.

Method 3: Export the chats you choose

Free exports up to 5 chats a day to Markdown. Premium is unlimited and adds a ZIP with Markdown, printable HTML, and JSON. Exporting saves a copy. It does not delete the chat.

  1. Open the panel. On chatgpt.com or claude.ai, open Bulk Delete and refresh the list if needed.
  2. Filter. Search titles or limit by age, for example older than 90 days.
  3. Export the ones worth keeping. Projects and pinned or starred chats are never selected, so export those individually if you need a file.
  4. Delete only what you do not need. Run delete after the export finishes. Free deletes are capped at 20 chats a day.

A monthly backup routine

  1. Pick a day. The first of the month is enough. The point is to repeat it.
  2. Filter older chats. Start with conversations older than 30-60 days.
  3. Export prompts, code, and decisions. Name files with a date and topic, such as 2026-10-seo-brief.md.
  4. Store the folder somewhere you already back up. A private cloud drive or disk is fine. Do not put exports in a public folder.
  5. Delete the rest. Only after the files are saved.

Keep the archive usable

  • One folder per month or per project is easier to search than one giant dump.
  • Put a one-line summary at the top of a long export.
  • Keep a separate file for prompts you reuse.
  • If the chats include work data, follow your company’s retention rules before you copy them to a shared drive.

Privacy

Exports can contain names, client details, or secrets that were pasted into a chat. Store them privately and delete files you no longer need.

Bulk Delete runs the export in your browser against the site you are signed into. Chat bodies for this workflow are not synced to Pick Ads. Account and billing details are in the privacy policy.
