How to Remove Parameter and Faceted URLs From Google
By the Pick Ads team · Tested on Chrome · Published October 20, 2026 · Updated October 20, 2026
Answer: Fix the cause first. Add
rel="canonical"ornoindexto filter and sort URLs that are already indexed, and let Google recrawl them. Once they've dropped out, block crawling of those parameters in robots.txt. The Removals tool is only a temporary extra for specific URLs that are causing harm. Google warns against using it to clean up duplicates.
Before you start: Search Console's old URL Parameters tool is gone. Google announced its deprecation in March 2022 and said its crawlers now handle parameters automatically (Spring cleaning: the URL Parameters tool).
Find them
- In the Page indexing report, check Duplicate without user-selected canonical and the warning Indexed, though blocked by robots.txt. Google names parameters like
type=dress, color=greenandsort=priceas typical causes of duplicate URLs (Page indexing report). - Export the example URLs. Each list shows up to 1,000.
- Use
site:example.com inurl:sort=only as a rough sample. Google sayssite:results aren't exhaustive (site: operator).
Example pattern: https://example.com/items?products=fish&color=green&size=tiny, from Google's faceted navigation documentation.
Strategy table
| Method | Use it when | Effect | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
rel="canonical" to the unfiltered page | Filtered pages are near-duplicates | A strong signal, but Google chooses the canonical (canonical) | May reduce crawling only slowly |
noindex | Filter URLs are indexed and you want them out | Removed from results once Google recrawls | Google must be able to crawl the URL, and that can take months |
robots.txt Disallow on parameters | You don't need facets crawled at all | Stops crawling and saves server resources (faceted navigation) | Google can't see noindex on blocked URLs, and blocked URLs can still be indexed without their content |
| 404 for empty filter combinations | A filter combination returns no products | Google says to serve 404 at that URL | Don't redirect to a shared "not found" page |
| Removals tool | Specific URLs that are urgent or embarrassing | Hidden for about six months | Temporary. Google says not to use it for canonicalization. |
Order that works: canonical or noindex → wait until the URLs drop out → robots.txt Disallow if you want to save crawling. If you block in robots.txt first, Google can't see the noindex (noindex).

Prefix removals
Bulk removal from an exported list
If specific parameter URLs need to come out of results quickly, for example spammy internal search URLs:
- Put the fix (noindex, canonical, or 404) in place first.
- Export the URLs from the Page indexing report and remove any URL you want to keep.
- Submit exact URL requests. Each request matches the full URL, including its parameters.
- For long lists, URLSweep queues the reviewed list in your Removals tab. Free covers 20 completed removals per property. See bulk remove URLs from Search Console.
Prevent re-indexing
- Link to canonical, unfiltered URLs in navigation and sitemaps.
- Use
&to separate parameters and keep filter order consistent. Google recommends both. - Consider URL fragments (
#color=green) for filters that don't need to be crawled. Google generally ignores fragments when crawling. - Keep parameter URLs out of your sitemap.
Verify
- Inspect sample URLs in URL Inspection. Check Indexing allowed? and Google-selected canonical (URL Inspection tool).
- Watch the counts in the Page indexing report over the following weeks.
- If you used Removals, check each request's status.
FAQ
Will canonical alone fix it?
Often, in time. Google treats rel="canonical" as a strong signal and usually indexes the canonical page instead of filtered duplicates. It's still a signal, though. Google's faceted navigation guide says canonical tags are generally less effective at reducing crawling than robots.txt rules over the long term.
Is blocking in robots.txt enough? Not for URLs that are already indexed. Blocking stops crawling, so Google can't see a noindex, and a blocked URL can still be indexed without its content. Use noindex or canonical first, wait for the URLs to drop out, then add robots.txt rules if you want to save crawling.
How long to clear? It depends on how often Google crawls those URLs. Google says it can take months to revisit less important pages and pick up noindex. A temporary removal hides specific URLs within about a day and lasts about six months, which gives the permanent fix time to work.
