How to Save WebP Images as JPG or PNG in Chrome
By the Pick Ads team · Tested on Chrome · Published October 20, 2026 · Updated October 20, 2026
Answer: Chrome saves an image in the format the website sent, which is often WebP. To get JPG or PNG, open the saved file in an image app (for example Preview on Mac) and export it, or use an extension that converts on download. Choose PNG if the image has transparency, because JPEG has none.
Quick steps
- Save the image in Chrome (it stays WebP).
- Open it in Preview (Mac) or another image editor and export as JPEG or PNG.
- Or download with Product Image Downloader, which saves JPG by default, or PNG.
Before you start
- Time: under a minute per image; a few minutes for a batch.
- You need: Chrome and, for the manual way, an image app.
- Free vs Premium: JPG or PNG export is part of the free plan, per getpickads.com, 2026-10-20.
- Rights: only download images you're allowed to use. See product image copyright.
Why WebP
WebP compresses better than older formats. MDN reports lossy WebP files are on average 25–35% smaller than comparable JPEGs, and lossless WebP about 26% smaller than PNG. It also supports transparency and animation (MDN image format guide). Stores use it to load faster. Shopify, for example, serves WebP or AVIF to browsers that support them (Shopify Help).
The catch for sellers: Amazon accepts JPEG, TIFF, PNG and non-animated GIF (Amazon product image guide). Etsy accepts JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG and HEIC (Etsy Help). Neither lists WebP.
Method 1: Native options
On Mac (Preview):
- In Chrome, right-click the image and choose Save image as... .
- Open the saved file in Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- In Format, pick JPEG (adjust the quality slider) or PNG.
- Click Save.
To convert several files, open them in one Preview window, select them all in the sidebar, then export (Apple Support).
On Windows: open the file in Paint and use Save as to pick JPEG or PNG.
Limits: one save plus one export per image, and you need to remember which files had transparency.
Method 2: With Product Image Downloader
Product Image Downloader saves images as JPG by default, or PNG, including WebP and AVIF sources, according to its Chrome Web Store listing.
- Open the product page (Amazon, Etsy, Shopify, Shopee, AliExpress) or any page, which uses "all images on this page" mode.
- Click the extension icon to open the side panel.
- Click Download (ZIP) or save individual files.
Options explained
| Setting | What it does | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| JPG (default) | Converts to JPEG, which is widely accepted and small | Photos without transparency |
| PNG | Converts to lossless PNG and keeps transparency | Logos, cut-outs, images with text |
| Square 1:1 on white (Premium) | Pads images to a square white canvas | When a marketplace or theme looks best with square images |
Quality and transparency notes
- Etsy turns transparency black. Even if you keep PNG, Etsy shows transparent areas as black, so flatten onto white before uploading there.
- PNG keeps what you have. PNG is lossless, so it doesn't add loss, but files are larger. It can't restore detail the WebP already discarded.
- Animated WebP becomes a single still frame in JPEG or PNG.
Troubleshooting
- The file still ends in .webp. You used Chrome's own Save image as. Export it from an image app, or use the extension.
- Black background after upload. The image had transparency. Re-save as JPG on white, or flatten the PNG.
- File is much larger as PNG. Expected. Use JPG for photos.
- Colors look different. Export in sRGB. Etsy converts to sRGB, and Amazon prefers RGB.
What the extension does not do
- It doesn't recover quality the source never had, or upscale small images.
- It doesn't grant reuse rights.
- It doesn't edit or crop beyond the Premium square option.

FAQ
Does converting reduce quality? Converting a lossy WebP to JPEG compresses it a second time, so a small extra loss is possible. Use a high quality setting. Converting to PNG adds no loss because PNG is lossless, but the file gets larger. Neither format restores detail that the original WebP file had already discarded.
Is transparency kept? Only in PNG. JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are filled with a solid color. If you upload to Etsy, note that Etsy shows transparent PNG areas as black. Flatten cut-out images onto a white background before uploading there.
Can I convert in bulk? Yes. On a Mac, open several files in one Preview window, select them in the sidebar and export once. Product Image Downloader converts every image as part of a ZIP download, so a whole product gallery arrives as JPG or PNG in one step.
