Product Image Requirements for Amazon, Etsy and Shopify
By the Pick Ads team · Tested on Chrome · Published October 20, 2026 · Updated October 20, 2026
Answer: Amazon needs images of at least 500 px on the longest side (1,000 px or more to enable zoom) and a pure white main-image background. Etsy recommends at least 2000 px wide and high, with the first photo at least 635 px. Shopify accepts up to 5000 x 5000 px and suggests 2048 x 2048 for square images.
The nuance: only Amazon sets strict background and framing rules. Etsy and Shopify mostly give recommendations. Every figure below was copied from the official help page on the date shown.

Master table
| Platform | Minimum | Recommended | Ratio | Format | Background | Count |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon | 500 px on the longest side (smaller can't be uploaded); max 10,000 px | 1,000+ px on the longest side (enables zoom); at least 72 dpi; RGB | Not specified | JPEG (recommended), TIFF, PNG, non-animated GIF | Main image: pure white, RGB 255, 255, 255 | At least 1 main image; 6+ additional images and 1 video recommended |
| Etsy | First listing photo at least 635 px wide and high | At least 2000 px wide and high | First photo landscape or square | JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG, HEIC (no animated GIF, no transparent PNG) | No requirement | Up to 20 photos and 2 videos |
| Shopify | None published | 2048 x 2048 px for square images; up to 5000 x 5000 px (25 MP), under 20 MB | Keep featured images in one consistent ratio | PNG best, then JPEG; also TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC, WebP | No requirement | Up to 250 media items per product |

Amazon notes
Amazon's Product image guide separates technical specs from rules for the MAIN image, which also appears in search results.
MAIN image rules (summary):
- Pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255). A limited number of product types may use a lifestyle main image.
- Amazon's wording on size in frame: "Show the product as 85% of the image."
- Show the entire product, once, as one unit with only the accessories included in the box.
- No props that aren't included, no mannequins, and packaging only when it's an important part of the product.
Rules for all images: match the product and title, and no added text, pricing, review stars, Amazon logos or badges ("Amazon's Choice", "Best seller") outside swatch images.
Technical files: Amazon doesn't accept EPS, BMP, PDF or application files such as PSD. Convert CMYK to RGB, don't rely on ICC color profiles, save JPEGs at the highest quality and flatten layers (Technical image file requirements).
Display: uploading doesn't guarantee your image is shown. Amazon picks images from several selling partners for the same product. A selected image can take up to 24 hours to appear.
Regional storefronts: we opened the UK, Canada and Australia versions of the same page (amazon.co.uk, amazon.ca, amazon.com.au). On 2026-10-20 they listed the same formats, pixel limits, background value and 85% wording as the US page.
Etsy notes
From Etsy's image requirements and best practices:
- Size: at least 2000 px wide and high is recommended. The first photo should be at least 635 px wide and high, or the listing may show up lower in search.
- Formats: .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic only. WebP isn't on the list. Animated GIFs aren't supported, and transparent areas of a PNG appear black.
- Shape: the first photo should be landscape or square, and it sets the shape of the photos after it. Thumbnails are cropped to square, portrait and landscape, so leave space around the product. The same page also advises against square crops, so landscape is the safer choice.
- Color: Etsy converts images to sRGB. Convert before uploading if colors shift.
- File size: Etsy warns that large files may not finish uploading on slow connections. The image page mentions 1 MB and the listing help mentions 300k. Both are warnings, not hard limits.
- Count: up to 20 photos and 2 videos (5–15 seconds) per listing. The "Listings look best with photos at least 2000 pixels wide" message is a suggestion. You can still publish.
Shopify notes
From Shopify's product media types page:
- Size: any size up to 5000 x 5000 px or 25 megapixels, under 20 MB. For square images, 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best.
- Format: PNG is called the best type for most product images, followed by JPEG. Shopify's theme image page instead suggests JPEG for product photos. For product images, follow the product media page.
- Ratio: use one consistent aspect ratio for featured images so collection pages line up.
- Count: up to 250 images, 3D models or videos per product. The first item is the featured image (Adding product media).
- Delivery: Shopify may compress images and serves WebP or AVIF to browsers that support them. That's why images saved from a Shopify store are often WebP.
Common rejection reasons
Amazon is the only one of the three that publishes rejection and suppression reasons. From its Image suppression page (US):
| Reason | Applies to |
|---|---|
| Text, logo, graphics or watermark | Main image |
| Background isn't pure white (RGB 255 255 255) | Main image |
| Main image missing or incorrect | Main image |
| Additional items not permitted for the product type | Main image |
| Product partly cropped out | Main image |
| Product in packaging, or with brand or swing tags | Main image |
| Props inside, hiding or surrounding the product | Main image |
| Blurry or pixelated | Any image |
| Product too small in the frame | Any image |
| Mannequin, hanger, model on a non-clothing item, or seated model | Category-specific |
Find suppressed listings under the Fix tab in Manage Products. To replace a main image, upload a new image with the MAIN variant code and allow up to 24 hours. On Etsy and Shopify, the common problems are uploads that time out, transparent PNGs turning black on Etsy, and uneven crops caused by mixed ratios.

Check your listing's existing images
Before you re-shoot, check what's already live:
- Open your listing in Chrome, right-click the main image and choose Open image in new tab. The tab title shows the file's pixel size.
- Compare that size with the table above. Marketplaces may serve a smaller copy than you uploaded, so check your original file too.
- For a whole gallery, Product Image Downloader lists every image in a listing and marks images with size badges (2000px+, 1:1, per the Chrome Web Store listing). You can then save the set as a ZIP to review offline.
Use this only on listings you own or have permission to download. See product image copyright. For platform-specific steps, see saving Amazon listing images, Etsy listing photos and Shopify product photos.
FAQ
Do .co.uk, .ca and .com.au have different rules? On 2026-10-20, the Amazon UK, Canada and Australia versions of the Product image guide listed the same formats, the 500 px minimum, the 1,000 px zoom threshold, the pure white main-image background and the 85% wording as the US page. Category style guides can add rules, so check your category too.
What causes suppression? On Amazon, a non-compliant main image is the usual cause: text or watermarks, a background that isn't pure white, a cropped product, packaging or props, or a missing main image. Blurry images or a product that's too small in the frame also qualify. Suppressed listings appear in the Fix tab of Manage Products.
What file type is best? Amazon recommends JPEG. Shopify's product media page calls PNG the best type, then JPEG. Etsy accepts JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG and HEIC, but not WebP or transparent PNG. If you sell on all three, a high-quality JPEG in sRGB/RGB at 2000 px or more works everywhere.
What size should I shoot to cover all three? At least 2000 px on each side meets Etsy's recommendation and clears Amazon's 1,000 px zoom threshold. It also stays well under Shopify's 5000 x 5000 px limit. For Amazon's main image, also plan a pure white background and keep the whole product in frame.
